The Dressing Gown in the Attic
It was the kind of house people inherit, not buy—three stories of crumbling wood and leaded glass, perched at the edge of the moor. My aunt left it to me when she passed, and with no family left, no ties to hold me elsewhere, I moved in.
The place smelled of lavender and rot.
Each floor held echoes of the past: faded portraits, scratched furniture, wallpaper peeling like old skin. The attic was the worst. The ceiling sloped inwards, low and oppressive, and the only light came from a round window that always looked dirty, no matter how much I cleaned it.
