The Gift of the Mask

I never believed in curses. Superstition, folklore, old wives’ tales—I dismissed them all as relics of a simpler time. But that was before the mask. Before I started hearing the drums.

It was a gift.

A going-away present from my co-worker, Marcus. We’d worked together for three years, and when I got promoted and transferred out of state, he handed me a small, wrapped box and told me to open it when I arrived at my new place. “Something for the wall,” he said with a grin. “A little culture for your sterile new condo.”

I didn’t open it until two days later, once the boxes were unpacked and the silence of my new apartment became too loud.

Inside was a mask…
