The Girl in the Yard

I was six the first time I saw her. A little girl standing at the very edge of our backyard, just beyond the fence.

It was old, that fence—rotting wood wrapped in thick, gnarled vines, choked with poison ivy. Behind it stretched an overgrown field, wild and untamed. I was playing with my brother that day when I spotted her, watching us. She didn’t move, didn’t wave, just stood there.

Something about her made my skin prickle…
