The Last Goodbye

I am the oldest of three sisters. Our mother was cold and calculating, our father a hardened Sicilian New York City cop. But for me, my dad was everything. I worshipped him, clung to the moments he was home, counted down the hours until I could hear his heavy boots in the hallway. My sisters resented me for it. They called me “the favorite,” “the responsible one,” the one who got nicer things while they were left in my shadow. To me, they were just two people I was forced to exist alongside.

One day, when we were young, my father caught us fighting. He pulled us into a circle and made us look at each other. His voice was like steel when he spoke.

"You see this? This is all you'll have when I'm gone."
