The Thing on the Wardrobe

I was young—maybe six or seven—when it happened. It was Halloween, and a group of us were having a sleepover at my friend’s house. The night had been full of laughter, sugar highs, and cheap horror movies, the kind that linger just long enough to worm their way into your dreams.

At some point in the night, I woke up with a jolt, my heart pounding hard against my ribs. The room was dark, the only light a faint glow from the streetlamp outside, casting long, twisted shadows across the walls. I had no idea what had startled me awake—until I saw it.

There was something sitting on top of the wardrobe…
