The Woman in the Veil
To see her face is to die. But not all deaths are merciful.
In the village of Alder Hollow—tucked deep in the folds of northern moorland, where the fog seems older than the trees—there is a legend not carved into plaques or scribbled in guidebooks, but passed mouth-to-mouth like a contagion. A warning that hangs in the air like smoke.
“If you see her, don’t look at her face. Don’t even try.”
She doesn’t knock. She doesn’t speak, unless it’s already too late. But she walks. Every evening as the sun slips behind the twisted hills and dusk stains the sky in purple and rust, she appears at the end of the lane.
